I’m
a huge fan of in-person, live college lectures. When I studied Business
at Youngstown State University in Ohio back in the 1980s, I loved
attending lectures. They were all about learning and big ideas. Class
sizes were moderate. And I appreciated being able to interact with my
fellow students and get to know my professors.Thanks to the growing popularity of online classes, many of today’s students are missing out on the benefits of in-person lectures. That’s a tragedy.
It’s also why I’m so passionate about promoting live lectures and other in-person learning experiences. Michael Zargham is the founder and CEO of BlockScience, an Oakland, California-based research-and-analytics firm specialized in engineering business decision processes on decentralized networks. Dr. Zargham earned a Ph.D. in systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied the optimization and control of decentralized networks. His earliest work on peer-to-peer effects on business decision making included the development of algorithms to reverse engineer the word-of-mouth effect in enterprise software licensing decisions. Dr. Zargham has designed data-driven decision systems and assembled a data science team for a media technology firm. He also worked on the mathematical specifications of blockchain-enabled software systems with a focus on observation and control of the information state of networks. I spend a lot of time in the air, travelling around the globe spreading the word about On-Demand Education Marketplace, or ODEM.IO. One of the questions I’m asked most often on my business trips is “How will blockchain technology help ODEM to improve education?” My answer: Blockchain gives us the opportunity to go big.

Blockchain and Turning the Tide on Underemployment
Sometimes life doesn’t turn out as expected. That’s what happened during the financial crisis of 2008–2009 to me and millions of others around the world. The job market quickly soured; well-paying employment evaporated. Stress from the crisis caused many sleepless nights. I worried about how I would support my family.
As the crisis unfolded, my wife Johanna and I had to use some of our retirement savings to pay for necessities. We were among the fortunate. However, for many people displaced from rewarding careers, underemployment became more than just an economic term. Working in minimum-wage roles became a way of life for many people. They were trapped.
While the global economy has rebounded, underemployment remains a problem, especially for young people and workers nearing retirement age. Defined as the underuse of an employed worker’s skills and training, underemployment is insidious. Read more

- Higher education is a broken industry that fails to prepare the widest possible spectrum of students for today’s fast-changing job markets. Education, especially the high-quality variety, is way too expensive. Cost, and the mountains of debt associated with it, is a major barrier to expanding student accessibility to high-quality education.ODEM empowers students to collaborate with top university professors to create customized educational experiences, part of a life-long process of keeping skills relevant in fast-changing job markets. The platform also tips the balance of information in favor of students to increase their ability to effectively manage and negotiate the cost of their education and related services.
- How did the idea of ODEM come about?
- ODEM.IO stems from my involvement with Excelorator’s Inc. and my introduction to blockchain technology, smart contracts and digital currencies. Excelorators was and remains a pioneer in the business of opening up top U.S. universities and corporate campuses to overseas students and executive for short-term, in person, learning experiences.
